Kathie Magness

Kathie grew up in Chicago and attended Valparaiso University to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Nutrition. She then moved to New Orleans where she was a hospital registered dietitian at Charity Hospital and St. Charles General Hospital before getting into Sales and Marketing for a food service distribution company. With this job, she was able to combine her knowledge of nutrition and coupled it with a desire to teach sales personnel the idiosyncrasies of health care dietary needs. While there, she also obtained a Master’s Degree in Counseling. This led to a series of promotions to Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and ultimately Houston where she served various food service distributors. Her final job in this line of work was at Sysco Corporation where she was the Director of Health Care Sales.

Midlife, Kathie decided to go back to graduate school again and obtained another Master’s Degree, this time in Organizational Development from Pepperdine University. After graduation and a brief time of having her own business, she ultimately joined the Organizational Effectiveness team at Royal Dutch Shell. In this job, she consulted with leaders around the world and in her last assignment, led a team of global consultants in various refineries and chemical plants. She retired from Shell in 2014.

In retirement, Kathie has enjoyed a variety of hobbies including knitting, quilting, playing bridge, volunteering, teaching Bible Study at two of Houston’s largest churches, and mentoring young women. She loves gardening and parenting her indoor/outdoor cat, Little Kitty. She has the gifts of hospitality and encouragement and has a passion for the homeless and other underserved people groups. With her husband, Milton, she is the Co-founder of H&F Ministries and is pleased to serve the Lord in this capacity.

One possible path to homelessness—and a story of one who experienced both Hope & Freedom.

Lost follows Clint Hazard, a modern-day cowboy who believes he was born 150 years too late. He loses his truck, his marriage, his son, his home, his friends, and faces the loss of job and a term in prison.

He struggles with habits that threaten to derail his life. His journey is aided by watching the change that takes place in his best friend who took the same journey about a year before him.

For a man with seemingly unlimited potential, Clint succeeds in making an absolute mess of his life. But he finds hope.

Clint Hazard got his life back on track. But for many of the people who live on the streets, they didn’t get the breaks Clint received or have a friend like Micah to lean on. They remain on the streets and are vulnerable to weather, hunger, and violence.

Reviews of Lost

“These tales are enlivened at every turn by the author’s obvious affection for today’s cowboy, 'a blend of renaissance man, pioneer, jack-of-all-trades, and good ole boy.’ He colorfully renders the atmosphere and details of ranch life, and although the author makes sure to closely link Clint’s personal story to broader recovery-philosophy generalities, he does so with a light touch that makes for smooth reading. This has the effect of humanizing Clint and grounding his story of personal discovery. A skillful combination of modern-day cowboy tale and substance-abuse parable.”
